The Van Aken Development District in Shaker Heights is a private development that aims to replace an outdated strip-shopping center and parking lot with a dense, pedestrian-friendly town center. The project will include apartments, retail, restaurants and public spaces, supported by structured parking and mass transit. The city hopes the new district will add to the overall vibrancy of Shaker Heights – and to tax base. So where does the project stand now, and is success likely?
